Fixing Metal Slug Gameplay Slowdowns on Anbernic RG35XX

I want to share my experience with Metal Slug. I love the series, but every port I tried had gameplay “slowdowns” due to severe FPS drops. This happens because most ports use very accurate emulators of the original hardware, which even replicate the FPS drops. While this can be handy in some situations (like dodging bullets), especially during boss fights, it often ruins the gaming experience.

When I got my hands on the Anbernic RG35XX, I finally decided to tackle this issue, and I managed to solve it. The game now runs very smoothly and enjoyably.

The solution is simple: use the FBA2012 core (I initially tried FBNeo, but FBA2012 seems to offer smoother performance).

Steps:

  1. Place the ROMs in the FBA2012 folder.
  2. Start any of the ROMs.
  3. Exit to the RetroArch menu (Menu + X).
  4. In RetroArch, go to Core Options.
  5. Set the CPU overclock value to 200.

Following these steps will eliminate the slowdowns and make the gameplay much smoother.
