If you’re like me and love tinkering with retro handhelds, you may have picked up the Data Frog R36S running ArkOS or AeUX firmware. One thing that really bugged me at first was how difficult it seemed to adjust the screen brightness. I went through all the forums and tried several key combinations, but nothing seemed to work right. Luckily, I found the solution, and now I’m sharing it to save you from the same headache.
The Shortcut that Works
Here’s how you can adjust the brightness:
- If you’re on certain ArkOS / AeUX firmware versions, the brightness is controlled by holding the FN button while pressing the volume keys. This works whether you’re navigating menus or in-game.
- Alternatively, on some firmware versions, you’ll need to hold the R3 (right analog stick) and then press the volume keys to adjust brightness.
In both cases, the functional shortcut makes things easy, but it wasn’t immediately obvious. Another key point: while you’re adjusting the brightness, the rest of the buttons, including the directional arrows, still work as expected. This means you can tweak your brightness while scrolling through menus without any interruption—something I find really convenient during gameplay or setup.
